IMO and the Sustainable Development Goals

A hot topic of 2020 (besides COVID-19) is also the 2030 UN Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Although they were adopted in 2015, the decade 2020-2030 is considered to be the a decade of action and delivery of these goals.

Being part of the United Nations family, IMO has stated to actively work towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the associated SDGs. While SDG 14 (Life Below Water) is central to IMO, aspects of the Organisation’s work can be linked to all individual SDGs (see diagram below).

For those interested to read more on how IMO relates to all SDGs, an official brochure available for download here.

IMO recognises that in order to achieve most of the elements of the 2030 Agenda there will be a need for a sustainable transport sector supporting world trade and facilitating global economy.

Is IMO doing enough? Hard to say at this point although on paper the future looks promising. We hope to see these goals being achieved by 2030. As mentioned at the beginning at this article, the next decade is all about action!
